Touch Assignment

Image
Beach Day , 2021 7 x 10 in. Pen on paper “And, though some of us like adventure travel, most prefer to sit in the sun like a rack of spareribs, basting ourselves regularly with sauce, and quietly frying, taking care to turn over so we’ll be cooked on both sides”. -Diane Ackerman, A Natural History of the Senses, page 92 This quote created such a vivid image in my mind that I wanted to recreate the scene in comic form. I chose the simple medium of pen and ink to achieve a classic comic book look. I wanted this piece to be a commentary on the separation we make between animals and humans. We cook and season animals, but we ourselves bake in the sun, “basting ourselves with sauce”. I thought putting pieces of meat in place of suntanning beachgoers would create a humorous representation of Ackerman’s metaphor.  Hand Candle , 2021 7 x 10 in. Pen on paper “In the sand-swept sprawl of the panoramic film Lawrence of Arabia a scene of quintessential machismo stands out: T. E. Lawrenc...

Gregor's Room

Image
In-Process Photos Final Solution This piece is inspired by Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis , an allegorical story of transformation. I used paper pulp to create a bed frame, boxspring, mattress, pillows, blanket, and alarm clock. I also created an abstract interpretation of the character Gregor. For the blanket, I crumpled up a piece of paper and fringed the edges, then painted it with ink to create a mottled effect. For the pieces of the bed I used containers and pressed the paper pulp into them like molds, to make compact shapes. I chose to use muted color palette for the inks because I wanted the items to feel old and worn out. I represented Gregor with a small green cube because I wanted to simplify his existence. I thought because the story is metaphorical, it would make sense if Gregor's appearance was too. I chose to make this decision because the story deals a lot with outward appearances and I wanted to make a commentary on the idea of appearance versus reality- things are...

Figurative Sculptures

Image
In-Process Photos The Man (2021) Air dry clay, scrap wood 10 x 4 x 2 in. This sculpture is meant to represent the rich white men who control the politics and economy of America. I drew inspiration from Jeff Bezos, the billionaire who owns Amazon. I wanted to emphasize the wealth gap in our country and make a statement about how unfair it is that the 1% owns so much money while so many people live in destitute poverty. The bust wears a collared shirt and tie to resemble a businessman, and the dollar signs in his eyes reflect the prioritization of personal gain over the greater good. Make Me A Sandwich (2021) Air dry clay, scrap wood 7 x 6 x 7 in. This sculpture was inspired by the phrase "go make me a sandwich," which is commonly used to demean women. The phrase stems from the outdated and extremely misogynistic idea that women "belong" in the kitchen and should primarily serve the needs of men. The sculpture has a sandwich where the head should be, serving as a co...

Dinner & A Movie

Image
Splat! Inspired by The Florida Project (2017) This piece is meant to reflect a naive, childish, and carefree mindset, the Disney princess plate and pink rubber duck alluding to the safety and commonality of girlhood and youth. The melting ice cream reminds of hot summer days while giving a sense of carelessness and disregard for the passage of time. The matches add an element of danger, suggesting there is something unsafe beneath the surface. The rainbow drawing is partly obscured, which hints that something may be hidden from view. The composition is messy, but visually balanced. Overall, the piece feels familiar and comforting, but gives off the feeling that there is underlying disappointment and instability.
